TWo National Parks In Our Backdoor - A Two Mile Drive AWAY
Blue Ridge Parkway
Outstanding scenery and recreational opportunities make the Blue Ridge Parkway one of the most visited sections of the National Park System. Split-rail fences, old farmsteads, mountain meadows and scenic overlooks with endless vistas make the Blue Ridge Parkway a popular attraction.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Encompassing over 800 square miles in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, no other area of equal size in a temperate climate can match the park's amazing diversity. Over 19,000 species have been documented in the park and scientists believe an additional 80,000-100,000 species may live here
Tourism IN Western North Carolina
Visitor Centers and Chamber of Commerce
Cherokee Chamber of Commerce
The ancestral homeland of the Cherokee Indians offers natural beauty, family attractions, outdoor activities and the rich history of the Great Smoky Mountains.
Visit Cherokee
A culture, a people, and a place that's actually a sovereign nation, Cherokee is located right in the heart of Western North Carolina. It's also base camp for hiking in the Great Smokies, arts and crafts shopping, native elk herd viewing, hours of fishing fun, and home to a history that spans millennia.
Smoky Mountain Host
Our region of the Smokies has the highest-elevation mountain in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Rising to an elevation of 6,643 ft., Clingmans Dome is also the the third highest mountain peak in the Appalachian Mountain Range. On clear days views expand over 100 miles.
Blue Ridge Waterways
The little Tennessee, Nantahala, Oconaluftee and Tuckasegee rivers flow through the North Carolina Smoky Mountains and dump into Fontana Lake at the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. These rivers, the lakes along the way and their watersheds encompass the Nantahala National Forest and two National Park units which create the “infrastructure” for the largest and most visited outdoor recreation area in the Southeastern United States.
Attractions
Mingus Mill
Mingus Mill is a historic and active Mill, located just a short distance past the Oconaluftee Visitors center in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Both the mill itself and the land surrounding the mill are beautiful. The mill is a popular stop for people traveling through the park, and especially for photographers.
Fire Mountain Trails
The Fire Mountain Trails are Cherokee’s newest source for big adventure—a multi-use trail system that is made to mountain bike, hike, or run. The network of trails is more than 10.5 miles total, so there is plenty of room for everyone to recreate safely, responsibly…and flowy? That is right—if you like your trails with a nice flow of features, with fun berms and quick hits of elevation that are manageable and fun, Fire Mountain is made for you.
Great Smoky Mountains Railroad
This delightful mountain vacationland is like a nature conservancy dotted with small towns. Old railroad depots are located in three historic towns; Dillsboro (no current departures), a village of shops and crafts; Bryson City, located on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park; and Andrews (no current departures), a scenic valley town in the Snowbird Mountains. All were founded in the 1800s and have retained some of their original character, adding to their historic charm.
